The movie portrayed the insidious nature of several common assumptions: that all must believe alike in order to live together, Christianity is the enemy of learning and questionning, the nature of truth scripture wants to portray is blind acceptance of the Bible as historically and scientifically as though it were front page headlines. St. Paul's doctrine of the Body of Christ makes clear if we all think alike we aren't Christ's body. His body is made up of all the different parts needed to be function--like if we're all eyes or all ears we wouldn't be a complete human. The established Church is as much Christ's enemy as Pharisees were. There is a dissonance between furthering the institution of the Church and furthering God's Kingdom--they are not the same.
Founders of USA separated Church from State to protect the state from dominance of the institution of the
Church. Roman Egypt certainly needed that protection. When the Church bvecame dominant over the government, death was the only result. Church needs protection from the State also. In Nazi Germany the Church became an arm of the Nazi government and millions died when Goodness wasn't able to point out the error of the state. |
